NES A to Z – M: Monster Truck Rally

Monster Truck Rally wasn’t great, but I still had fun with it.

Welcome back! We are halfway through the alphabet at the letter M! Up for the letter M is Monster Truck Rally. Let’s take a quick look into the game:

The name of the game pretty much says it all, it’s a monster truck game with several different events such as Car Crush and Bog Race. The game is played from an isometric view similar to games like R.C. Pro Am. As for the graphics, they’re okay but nothing special. The sound, however, was not great and music was non-existent. You’ll go nuts listening to the drone of your truck engine so I had to put some tunes on in the background while I played. The controls were alright, shifting gears wasn’t very intuitive and was easy to forget to do while playing. Overall, I thought it was a pretty average game.

Despite the game being extremely average, I had some good dumb fun with the game. Have you ever played a game that wasn’t great but somehow you had a fun time with it? That’s what happened to me with this game. For some reason, even though I never once beat the AI, I had fun just messing around playing this game and going through the events. I can’t really recommend it though, unless you want to waste an hour of time you’ll never get back.

That’s all I have for Monster Truck Rally! I’m thinking about trying to get another four games down this weekend so keep it locked in for more NES action soon!

NES A to Z – L: Low G Man

Low G Man was challenging but fun. It’ll definitely test those reflexes.

Wow! What a string of great games I’ve had so far. Low G Man scores points with me for being a decent run and gun platformer. Lets take a closer look:

At first when I saw the corny intro to the game, I thought this game was going to be below average with frustrating gameplay. I was wrong. While the game did present a good amount of challenge, game strategies like memorizing enemy locations and movements helped tremendously. The name of the game was the same as many other platformers: avoid damage at all costs and collect as many power-ups as possible before confronting the boss. Once I had a good handle on things, the game went pretty smoothly. The unlimited continues helped too. I’ll be uploading some gameplay to my YouTube channel later so be sure to take a look!

Overall, I’d say if you like fast action run and gun platformers like Contra give this game a shot. It’s another game I might revisit later and definitely is worth a play.

NES A to Z – K: Kid Klown in Night Mayor World – Wrap Up

I totally forgot to wrap this game up. It actually wasn’t too bad. Take a look.

Whoops! I totally forgot to wrap this game up! Let me quickly get my final thoughts on this game out before I get any deeper into my A-Z list.

Kid Klown wasn’t too bad. It was a bump-and-jump style platformer with some decent graphics, sound, and gameplay. There was a fair amount of challenge and my frustration level was low even though I didn’t get overly far into the game. There wasn’t a lot of heart-pumping action in the game but I welcomed the more casual gameplay after playing a couple of action packed shmups previously. It really wasn’t anything too special and after digging a little I found that it was basically a reskin of a Mickey Mouse title and it shows in the gameplay. Not great, not bad, but I’d say worth a play if you’re into platformers of that style.

That’s it for Kid Klown! It’s been quite a week so hopefully I don’t forget another post! Better late than never, though. Stay tuned for more retro action as I prepare for the letter M pick: Monster Truck Rally!

NES A to Z – L: Low G Man

Next up I’ve got Low G Man to play! Let’s get into it and see what we’re in store for!

Hey there! I’m back and we are up to the letter L right now. The random game I’ll be playing for L is Low G Man, yet another game I have zero familiarity with. From the title I see it is published by Taxan, a name I recognize from 8 Eyes and the original GI Joe game. Sounds like it might be good so let’s dive in!

NES A to Z – K: Kid Klown in Night Mayor World

Night Mayor World….. ha! I get it! You’re funny…

Hey all! I’m whizzing through these games and okay, not gonna lie, I’ve probably only spent about an hour, hour and a half tops on the last couple games. Trying to get through M by midnight! Not sure if that’ll happen but anyways up next for the letter K is Kid Klown in Night Mayor World. Another game I haven’t played before so be ready! Just kidding, I’m sure everything will be just fine and the game will be great. Regardless, it’s time to get at it so stay tuned and game on!

NES A to Z – J: Journey to Silius – Wrap Up

Journey to Silius was a blast. No really, it was. Read on for more.

Phew! What a day! Got a few games down and now we are to the letter K! But right now we’re still on J with Journey to Silius. Let’s take a quick look:

Journey to Silius was pretty fun during my session. It’s a run and gun shooter that reminded me a lot of the Contra series. You’ve got your power ups, extra lives, continues, and checkpoints to help you out during the mission. The difficulty was pretty high like Contra as well, but I thought it was fairly balanced overall. Oh and I almost forgot, there’s some pretty good tunes and the visuals are on par for the NES. Game strategy on this one is pretty basic: memorize enemy locations and patterns and take as little damage as possible before defeating the boss. Simple enough, but challenging at the same time.

Overall, I had a pretty good time with Journey to Silius. I’m a fan of the Contra series on the NES and this game is right up there with it. Do I dare say it might be an underrated title? Play it and decide.

That’s it! Stay tuned for the next pick for the letter K!

NES A to Z – I: Isolated Warrior – Wrapping Things Up

Isolated Warrior was chock full of fast, fun, shoot-em-up action. Definitely worth a play.

What’s up everybody! It’s been a wild time figuring out the audio settings for my stream but I think I’ve got them down. You can hear me on the mic but I might need to adjust the game volume a touch. Anyways, let’s get into the game!

This game was a blast to play. It’s a shooter with an isometric style view and tons of fast-paced action. The gameplay really got my heart pumping with all of the action on-screen. The graphics and audio both were on point and never detracted from the game. The challenge level seemed pretty balanced and the frustration level for me was pretty low while I played through the game. Some other highlights were figuring out how to use secondary weapons and the rewarding cutscenes after finishing a stage.

I know this post is pretty short but I’ve got quite a few games to get through! Overall, I’d recommend Isolated Warrior especially if you enjoy shoot em ups. It’s got a lot of fast paced action to challenge your reflexes and it’s definitely worth a play.

That’s it for Isolated Warrior! I’ll be announcing the pick for the letter J very shortly so stay tuned!

NES A to Z – H: Hudson Hawk – Final Thoughts

Hudson Hawk is getting dragged off the edge early tonight.

Hey there! Okay, so I know I said I’d play each game for at least two hours but this game was mega frustrating to play. The controls were super touchy and I felt like half the time I just got lucky making some of the jumps in the game. The sound and visuals are kind of blah and the worst of it all was I had to start all the way from the beginning when I continued. No checkpoints or anything. After a while I just couldn’t play anymore. It just wasn’t any fun.

Some of the highlights I enjoyed were the puzzle solving I had to do early on to figure out how to advance past the owls and aggressive dachshund by pushing some crates.

I really can’t recommend this game. Try it if you must, but don’t try to play it very long.
